トム・レイズ [ペインター]

Born in Los Angeles in 1958, Tom Reyes is a contemporary artist who has been working globally, from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York to Tokyo. He visited Japan for the first time in 1981 and became greatly interested in Japanese culture, which led him to move to Tokyo in 1983. He decided to form his own artistic concept called S.U.S.H. (Subjective Understanding Subconscious Heterodox) and started his work according to this; he has been expressing the emotional contradictions in his world of abstract paintings. His style merges layers of creative mistakes hiding in preoccupation and the subconscious with his philosophical thinking. In 1985, his first solo exhibition took place at the MOTOI GALLERY in Hollywood. He designed a stage set for Toshiko Akiyoshi's thirtieth anniversary concert in 1990 and did some stage art for the Latin and Brazilian Festival which took place in a Jazz club, 'Blue Note Tokyo', from 1990 to 1994. Since 1991, he has been developing live art sessions called "VISIBLE SOUND" in many countries, collaborating with first-rate artists from all over the world such as Airto Moreira[percussions], Flora Purim[vocal], Richie Beirach[piano], Kenny Kirkland[piano], Victor Jones[drums], Vinnie Colaiuta[drums], Cornell Dupree[guitar], Gary Bartz[saxophone], Alex Foster[saxophone] and Conrad Herwig[trombone]. It is as if he becomes physically and mentally one with musicians, sharing the space with their improvisation and turns the sound into art with his unique colour sense. Many artists who have collaborated with Tom said that live sessions with him were like a subconscious interchange where the sound and the colours naturally coexisted and created a work. The results of performances with musicians are vivid and unconventional paintings which strongly attract people who see them. In 1986, he took part in the Edinburgh Art Festival in Scotland. He held a solo exhibition at Setagaya Museum in Tokyo in 1991. In 2006, he is planning more dynamic activities based in New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. The movement of "VISIBLE SOUND" is now receiving global attention. In April 2006, long awaited live performances with an outstanding trumpeter, Toshinori Kondo, are to be held in Tokyo. A new vision of the world will be created with their outpouring of energy.
